Mourinho backs Chelsea to bounce back from European exit

Jose Mourinho has vowed Chelsea will respond from their Champions League exit against Southampton on Sunday.

The Blues, eliminated in the last-16 on away goals by Paris St Germain, return to Stamford Bridge bidding to remain clear of second-placed Manchester City.

"I always react well to setbacks," Mourinho said. "I have the same belief in these players. One thing is to be disappointed, and try and find the reasons why we - not them - we didn't succeed in these games.

"The best way to be stronger is to win all the time. It's the best way" - Jose Mourinho

"Another thing is to lose belief in the players. These are the same players who have been top of the league since day one. Not yesterday, or in August, and then down and up. Since day one."

Mourinho does not agree with the mantra that defeats make you stronger.

"The best way to be stronger is to win all the time. It's the best way," he said.

"When you say when you lose you are stronger - no. You can learn from bad moments, but the best way is to win all the time."

Mourinho will resist wholesale changes despite the disappointment of Wednesday's loss.

"The changes I'll make won't be to punish mistakes," he said. "They'll be because I want to rest this one [player], give a chance to that one, play a different way. Two or three changes. Four maximum."

Mourinho's Southampton counterpart, Ronald Koeman called on his side to produce a fearless, confident performance during the game.

"Confidence and not afraid," the Dutchman said when asked how Saints need to approach the match.

"That's the most important when you play against big teams in an away game that you be yourself and you focus on your own game, your own way of playing, your own organisation.

"We know one of the best 45 minutes we play at home against Chelsea and that gives the team and the players confidence that we can have a good result."
