Drogheda United manager Johnny McDonnell has further strengthened his attacking options for the new season with the addition of Daryl Kavanagh.

Kavanagh put pen to paper on Saturday morning after coming on as a substitute in the 2-0 Jim Malone Cup defeat to Dundalk on Friday night.

Kavanagh said: ‘I’m very happy to get the deal sorted. It all happened very fast over the last couple of days but I was in contact with the club a few weeks ago and it went cold for one reason or another.

"Johnny called me again during the week to see how I was and once I heard Pete Mahon was coming in, my mind was made up."

The Tipperary native departed Sligo Rovers at the end of last season having only made a handful of appearances during a four-month spell before taking part in the FIFPro tournament for out of contract players in Norway.

Forced to face the frustration and uncertainty that comes with being a free agent, Kavanagh admitted that he was downbeat following a lack of interest.

"To be honest, I didn’t have many offers. I expected something to come off the FIFPro tournament but it never materialised so I came back home and made sure I kept myself fit if a call came.

"And Johnny followed through and I’m proud to be a Drogheda United player. I’m just looking forward to getting back playing again."

The striker is best known for his time as a St Pat’s player, where during the course of two spells he made the PFAI team of the year in 2011 under Pete Mahon, and then played an important role in their title-winning campaign two years later.

"I’ve worked with Pete before at St Pat’s and we got along very well so I was obviously eager to work with him again. I was very interested when Johnny made first contact several weeks back but once I really got the chance to sit down and talk to him about his plans for the side, I was excited to join.

"I think it’s important considering all the changes that we get a good start in the league. On paper, I think we have a strong eleven and our main aim from the off should be to make United Park a fortress and then start to carry that form on the road.

"We have Longford away tomorrow in the Leinster Senior Cup, which should give us a good indication of where we are at."
