Wexford Youths kept their Continental Tyres Women’s National League title charge rolling with a controlled 2-0 victory over Peamount United today.
Willie Doyle’s side were never really troubled as they picked up their fifth league win on the road.
Carol Breen bagged her seventh goal of the campaign on 25 minutes after Youths had threatened throughout the first half - Peas 'keeper Brooke Dunne made a great save less than a minute before the opener after Claire O’Riordan was one on one.
Lucy McCartan cleared Ciara Rossiter’s long range drive off the line after Peas had cleared a Youths corner in first half stoppage time, but Aisling Frawley doubled the visiting side's advantage on 68 minutes.
She finished off a fine team effort that ended with Kylie Murphy playing a killer ball into Frawley’s path.
Second half substitute Aoibhean Webb came closest to adding to Youths' tally but Pea’s 'keeper Dunne keept the ball out with her legs.
Elsewhere, Raheny United kept their three in a row hopes alive with a stunning 11-1 victory over Cork City FC in Bishopstown.
Katie McCarthy caused a surprise when giving City the lead after 10 minutes with her third goal of the campaign and Cork’s ninth, but Katie McCabe got the Pandas back on level terms on 21 minutes before giving her side the lead 10 minutes later.
New signing Sarah Rowe grabbed her first for Raheny just 60 seconds later - and then the onslaught began.
Shauna Newman gave the Pandas a three-goal half time lead with a stunning long range drive.
The champions were in sparkling form in the second half, Katie McCabe grabbed her hat trick six minutes after the restart with a stunning free-kick then McCabe made it 6-1 seven minutes later with Noelle Murray getting on the score sheet after 61 minutes and McCabe adding her fifth on 71 minutes.
Siobhan Killeen and Murray both found the net in the final 15 minutes with McCabe rounding off the scoring with her sixth of the day and 18th of the season to make it 11 -1 to Raheny United.
Wexford Youth lead the Continental Tyres Women’s national league with 34 points from 13 games, while Raheny United move into second place with 27 from 11 games.
Next Sunday sees a massive game in the league as leaders Wexford Youths host Raheny United in a first versus second clash at Ferrycarrig Park.
