Cardiff City have signed Irish striker Eoin Doyle from Chesterfield for an undisclosed fee, believe to be in the region of £1m.

The 26-year-old has joined the Bluebirds in a deal that will keep him at Cardiff City Stadium until the summer of 2018.

Doyle has scored 25 goals in just 33 appearances for Chesterfield this season.

He is expected to be in contention for Saturday’s trip to Sheffield Wednesday, subject to international clearance.

“When I heard about Cardiff’s interest this morning, I couldn’t ignore it,” Doyle told Cardiff's website.

“It was then a case of getting in the car and getting down here as quickly as I could. I’m really looking forward to getting going now and the challenge ahead.

“Now it’s about getting into the team – there are a lot of good strikers at the club already. Then it’ll be a case of contributing as much as I can and scoring a few goals to help us up the league.”

The former Sligo Rovers and Shamrock Rovers man said he hadn't given much thought to breaking into the Republic of Ireland senior squad but that it would be a "dream" to do so.

"I haven't thought that far ahead to be honest but it would be a dream for me to play for my country," he said.

"If playing for this great club helps me to get that opportunity I'll be trying my best to make that happen."
