Galway WFC 0-0 Wexford Youths Women’s AFC

Raheny United kept their Continental Tyres Women’s National League three-in-a-row hopes alive after an emphatic victory at home to Cork City Women’s today.

Noelle Murray opened the scoring for the champions after just five minutes in a chilly Santry Stadium with a drive that City keeper Trisha Fennelly failed to deal with.

The Pandas doubled their lead six minutes after the break when Siobhan Killeen crossed for Rebecca Creagh to head home.

Raheny battered the Cork rearguard with Noelle Murray’s 35-yard effort coming back off the crossbar and City keeper Fennelly keeping out Katie McCabe's follow-up.

The home side put the game beyond doubt 12 minutes from time - Pearl Slattery heading home Katie McCabe’s free kick - and McCabe made it four three minutes later when she volleyed home Catherine Cronin’s cross.

Elsewhere, leaders Wexford Youths Women’s AFC extended their lead at the top of the table with a hard fought draw away to Galway.

Don O’Riordan’s Galway are the first side to keep a clean sheet against the Wexford women this season in a game where Galway could have come away with all three points.

Lynsey McKey went close twice for the Tribeswomen with Marie Curtin smashing the crossbar ten minutes from the end.

The result leaves Wexford Youths two points clear of both Raheny United and UCD Waves with 22 points.

Galway WFC lie in sixth place with seven points, one behind Castlebar Celtic, with Peamount United fourth on 12 points. Cork City Women’s FC hold seventh place with two points.

Meanwhile, Saturday night’s game between UCD Waves and Peamount United was abandoned due to floodlight failure.

UCD had taken a three goal lead through Julie-Ann Russell and Emily Cahill. The league committee will consider the matter at their next meeting.
