Belfast-born FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce has condemned what he called FAI chief executive John Delaney's "stupidity" after the the latter was recorded singing a republican song in a Dublin pub.

A video posted on YouTube last week showed Delaney singing the song Joe McDonnell in The Bath pub in Dublin following the Republic of Ireland’s 4-1 win over USA at Aviva Stadium.

"I am totally shocked and saddened that someone I have known for many years should get involved in such stupidity," Boyce, a former president of Northern Ireland's Irish Football Association, told the Irish Independent.

"This type of behaviour from the chief executive of the Football Association of Ireland has to be condemned."

Delaney apologised for the incident on Tuesday, saying that though he believed the manner in which the video was recorded was wrong, he was sorry if it caused any upset.

The Waterford man also said that he "abhors violence and have worked tirelessly through my role at the Football Association of Ireland to strengthen links between communities on this island, north and south".

Reports that legal representation on behalf of the FAI had earlier warned various media outlets that Delaney was not the man in the video were later explained as a misunderstanding due to the FAI chief executive being uncontactable while travelling.
