Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has offered his "full support" to his assistant Roy Keane after an altercation at the Ireland team hotel on Wednesday.

There was an incident involving Keane and another person at team hotel in Portmarnock and gardaí and an ambulance were called to the hotel, although it is not clear whether anyone was assessed at the hotel or if they required further treatment.

The FAI issued a statement offering its support to Keane, in which it was stated that it was Keane who had asked that gardaí be alerted to the incident.

O’Neill’s statement echoed this support for Keane.

"The FAI and I have been fully briefed about the circumstances of what happened at the team hotel last night," O'Neill said.

"Roy asked that the gardaí be called and he has notified them of what happened. While this process is on-going we are unable to say more at this point.

"However I can say that, having been made aware of the facts, that Roy has both my full support and the full support of the FAI and John Delaney.

"We are now focused, as we have been all week, on the game in hand and we won’t be saying any more on this issue."

The Ireland squad is due to fly to Glasgow, where they face Scotland in vital Euro 2016 qualifier on Friday evening.

Martin O'Neill's men are currently joint top of Group D after taking seven of the first nine points available to them.

O'Neill and number two Keane celebrated a year in charge of the Ireland team earlier this month.
