Spain defender Sergio Ramos has called for more of the same after the defending champions started their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign in style - but also urged fans to show patience with the new-look national team.

Following Spain's disastrous World Cup defence and the loss of several senior players to retirement and injury, coach Vicente del Bosque opted for a host of new faces in his squad for Monday's clash against Macedonia and was rewarded with a comprehensive 5-1 win.

Valencia striker Paco Alcacer, on his competitive debut, was among the scorers, while Ramos (pen), Sergio Busquets, David Silva and Pedro were also on the mark at the Estadi Ciutat de Valancia as Spain rocketed to the top of Group C.

Ramos was pleased to get off to such a convincing start after seeing Spain lose three of their last four matches, but has warned it is early days still.

He said: "We need to have patience and confidence in what could develop with all the people coming in. It's been a positive start and we must continue along this line."

Of the 14 players involved in Spain's opening World Cup match against Holland - which resulted in a 5-1 loss - only seven featured against Macedonia as the likes of Koke, Isco and Munir El Haddadi showed a glimpse of what the future La Roja could look like.

Alcacer is another who has been brought in and the 21-year-old made the most of his chance against Macedonia after being named in the starting line-up.

Alcacer told TVE: "I'm very happy for the game, for my debut here at Levante's ground, in Valencia my home, and above all for the goal and win. It's been great.

"This team has a lot of quality and it was only a matter of time that the good performances and goals arrived."
