Daniel Sturridge was left "heartbroken" after suffering a thigh injury that ruled him out of England's Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland.

Sturridge pulled up during England's training session at St George's Park and scans later revealed the striker would be unable to travel to Basle for the game on Monday.

The striker was clearly devastated by the news, tweeting on Friday evening: "Heartbroken soul right now believe me. Hopefully be back soon fighting fit for LFC. Nothing worse than being injured. My heads gone..."

The Football Association would not reveal the extent of the injury, with a spokesman only confirming that Sturridge would miss the Switzerland game and return to his club for treatment.

Considering Sturridge's importance to their team, Liverpool will be hoping their 25-year-old striker is not sidelined for a lengthy period.

England will also be hindered by the loss of Sturridge, who was one of only a handful of players to emerge from Wednesday night's narrow win over Norway with his reputation enhanced.

Manager Roy Hodgson, who came in for heavy criticism following his team's performance at Wembley, is now without 15 senior players for a qualifier he must win to boost the morale of the supporters who stayed away for that poorly-attended Norway game.

Ben Foster and Jack Colback had already pulled out of the 22-man squad before Sturridge suffered his injury.

Hodgson will not call up any replacements so just 19 players - two of whom are goalkeepers - will travel to Switzerland on Sunday morning.
