Former Republic of Ireland international Shay Given has joined Middlesbrough on a one-month emergency loan subject to Premier League clearance.

The 37-year-old Donegal could feature in Saturday’s home game against Bolton.

Given previously played for Blackburn, Newcastle and Manchester City, and also spent time at loan at Sunderland in 1996.

Given made 125 appearance for Ireland before announcing his retirement after the 2012 European Championship.

He subsequently stated his willingness to return under ex-manager Giovanni Trapattoni but was not called upon by the Italian.
