Paul Green and Anthony Pilkington have been named in the Republic of Ireland team to play Austria tomorrow night in Vienna (kick-off 7.45pm).

Green replaces the injured Glenn Whelan, while Pilkington takes the place of James McClean.

Ireland need a win in Austria to keep any hope of rescuing their World Cup qualifying chances and even that may not be enough if Sweden pick up three points in Kazakhstan (5pm).

Manager Giovanni Trapattoni said: "We are aware the game is very important for both teams. We know the only objective is to win. It is the same for Austria.

"Only with a victory can we keep our hopes alive. But we still have three matches to play and anything can happen.

"The next matches will be difficult for all teams. We must stay positive. What happens in this 90 minutes against Sweden can happen to other teams as well.

"I spoke to the players today. They know that they must play with pride for the team, for our shirt, for our country.

"We couldn't play three or four or five strikes because we are away from home. Austria showed us in Dublin they are a tough team and we need a balance.

"Anthony Pilkington played 20 minutes and I like him. He is a player that is athletic, he can change his positon the right and left like I tried the last game with McClean. He can be a beautiful surprise because he is a different player."

Ireland: Forde, Coleman, O'Shea, Dunne, Wilson, Walters, Green, McCarthy, Pilkington, Keane, Long.
