Richard Dunne has decided to continue his international career with the Republic of Ireland.
The Aston Villa man met with Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni and assistant manager Marco Tardelli today.
A statement from the FAI released this afternoon said: “Giovanni Trapattoni and Marco Tardelli held a positive meeting with Richard Dunne today.
“Richard reconfirmed that he will be available again for international duty once he makes a full recovery.”
There had been concern that Dunne would follow Shay Given and Damien Duff into international retirement.
Dunne did not enjoy a successful Euro 2012 campaign, but he was pivotal during the qualification games and his experience will be crucial if Trapattoni is to lead the Republic to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Dunne, who turns 33 on 21 September, has 76 caps to his name and has scored eight goals.
He is currently sidelined after undergoing groin surgery, and has not been named in the squad for the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan on 7 September.
