Striker Danny North happy to extend stay with league leaders Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers striker Danny North has spoken of his delight at signing a new contract with the Bit o’ Red until the end of the 2013 season.

North, who has enjoyed a prolific start to his career with Rovers, has hit 17 goals in 20 games so far this year to help Ian Baraclough's men lead the Airtricity League Premier Division by six points.

North said: "I’m delighted to get my future sorted for another year."

He continued: "I’m always looking to be amongt the goals but to get so many early on, you’ve got to be happy with that.

"I’m going to try to improve and do that every day in training and on the pitch. It is nice to be knowing where my future lies, there is that little less pressure.

"The club came to me and wanted to tie me down and the deal was right so I signed it. I wouldn’t have come here if I didn’t think it was right for me. Things have got better and better and hopefully they can keep going."

The Bit o’ Red begin their Europa League campaign on Thursday as they face an away leg against Spartak Trnava in second round qualifying.

The striker is looking forward to the European adventure: “Europe is coming and hopefully it is not too much of a distraction. We can’t let it affect us. It is good to play in Europe but obviously the main thing is the league.

“We’ve got to knuckle down and get our heads down between now and the end of the season and give it a good go.

“It is exciting. We‘re looking forward to it. You go to places you’ve never been before and it is an experience. You’ve got to enjoy it.”

Rovers today opened the new Volkswagen Bank End to increase The Showgrounds seated capacity to 4,000.

The development was opened by Airtricity League Director Fran Gavin and Rovers chairman Dermot Kelly to make The Showgrounds one of the best football facilities in the country.

With over 1,300 seats, the Volkswagen Bank end replaces the former Railway End terrace as part of the club’s development plan and will be open for the first time for next week’s Europa League tie.

The match could provide a record seated attendance at the venue that has been home to Sligo Rovers since formation in 1928.

The project, which cost in the region of €200,000, was overseen by Plan Design Associates of Ballina and was the biggest in The Showgrounds since the Treacy Avenue stand was erected over a decade ago.
