Darren O'Dea sat out Republic of Ireland training in Montecatini today, with manager Giovanni Trapattoni confirming he will be rested for tomorrow night's game against a local selection.

O'Dea has a slight thigh muscle strain and watched on as his team-mates where put through their paces at the home of fourth-tier side Borgo A Buggiano.

Trapattoni said: "He has a little bit of pain. He wished to make training but we advised him to stay quiet.

"It is no problem. He wants to do training but it is better that he rests, so tomorrow he won't play."

Covering defender Paul McShane also took no part in training as he is nursing an ankle knock.

Shay Given and John O'Shea trained separately from the main squad, with O'Shea focusing on speed and agility work.

Given went through basic goalkeeping drills before working on kicks with just his left foot to protect his right knee.

He was later seen holding an ice pack to that knee, but the manager expects him to return to training this week.

"Shay Given is alright for Wednesday (training). After tomorrow, John O'Shea will be 90% ready to play," said Trapattoni.

Speaking to the electronic media, the manager gave an indication of his starting line-up for tomorrow's game, but left the centre-half position alongside Richard Dunne open.

Kieren Westwood will once again start in goal in Given's absence, with Kevin Foley and Stephen Kelly starting in the full-back positions.

Recent call-up Paul Green will partner Keith Andrews in central midfield, with Shane Long and Stephen Hunt providing the width. Jonathan Walters and Simon Cox will start in attack.

Trapattoni is hoping to avoid more of the injuries that have disrupted the team's preparations for their first major tournament in ten years.

He said: "It is a good selection. The coach is one of my former players. I advised them calm because we don't need injuries. We need the 90 minutes and to enjoy it."

The small stadium that plays host to Ireland's sessions this week has been used by Trapattoni for numerous such training camps in the past.

He said: "It is a beautiful village. It is also near the airport because many other locations are too far in the mountains. It takes two hours by bus.

"This is easy to get to from the airport. I was here many times with other teams - Milan, Juventus and Cagliari. I always felt good here."
