Reading won promotion to the Premier League on Tuesday with a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest - completing a remarkable turnaround.

The Royals were second bottom of the npower Championship in September with just four points after six games.

But six successive wins, including a 3-1 win at promotion rivals Southampton last week, have secured a top flight return after four years away.

Reading now have two games to battle Southampton for the championship - with the Saints needing two more points to join the Royals in the top flight.

Mikele Leigertwood netted a late winner for Brian McDermott's side.

The midfielder broke the deadlock in the 81st minute as the Royals eventually overcame a dogged Forest side to spark wild celebrations at the Madejski Stadium.

The goal came minutes after news filtered through that nearest challengers West Ham had been held to a 1-1 draw by Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Forest, though, came close to snatching a point and putting the champagne on ice but substitute Marcus Tudgay's header was cleared off the line by Alex Pearce with the striker's follow-up effort being kept out by Adam Federici deep into injury time.
