Monaghan United 0-1 Drogheda United

Drogheda Utd continued their fine start to the season with a 1-0 win over Monaghan Utd in Gortakeegan to move joint second with Shamrock Rovers in the Airtricity League Premier Division.

It was a happy return for former manager Mick Cooke as another former Mons player Declan “Fabio” O Brien found the net in the 43rd minute.

It was lead that was fully deserved by the visitors as they had been the most enterprising, particularly in the first half. They are now unbeaten since their opening night defeat against Shamrock Rovers.

Trade mark free kicks from Sean Brennan had tested Chris Bennion in the home goal on three separate occasions in the first half, while “Fabio” had fluffed his lines near the end of the opening period with glaring misses when it looked easier to score.

He made amends however two minutes before the break when he caught the Mons defence flat footed and finished well to the net.

The Drogs were then reduced to 10 men a minute after taking the lead when Ryan Brennan seen straight red for a late challenge on Robert Bayly.
