Karl Sheppard grabbed the only goal of the game at Terryland Park as Shamrock Rovers extend their lead at the top of the table.

Sheppard pounced in the sixth minute as the Hoops made a flying start against a Galway United outfit short on attacking flair.

But Galway were determined throughout and that will have encouraged manager Sean Connor despite a third straight loss.

The Hoops remain a potent outfit, though, and were keen to exploit Galway’s lack of confidence by seizing the initiative early on.

That is precisely what Rovers did as midfielders Stephen Rice and Ronan Finn ensured they quickly established control.

Michael O’Neill’s team hit the front in the seventh minute courtesy of a smashing Karl Sheppard header, who reminded his former club about his considerable potential.

Gary McCabe’s right wing cross caused panic in the Galway area and Sheppard provided a crisp headed finish to nudge Rovers ahead.

Sheppard then carved a gilt edged opportunity for strike partner Gary O’Neill, who was thwarted by a splendid Greg Fleming save.

Galway were struggling to contain the pacy Sheppard who had a 12th minute effort gathered by Fleming as Rovers sought to add another goal.

But Sean Connor’s team responded with grit and determination and were unfortunate not to equalise during a passionate burst.

Sean Kelly fizzed a long range effort wide, while Alan Mannus had to use all his guile to catch a curling Alan Murphy shot in the 21st minute.

After the restart Rovers defended impressively as Ken Oman and Dan Murray were in splendid form.

Galway did go close late on, but a Murphy free kick went wide, and Rovers could have added an insurance goal in stoppage time, but the excellent Finn was off target.
