Former Celtic defender Willie O'Neill, a member of the legendary 1967 'Lisbon Lions' side, has died aged 70, the Scottish giants confirmed Thursday.

A statement on Celtic's website paid tribute to O'Neill, who joined the club in 1959 before making his first team debut in 1961.

'The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with Willie's family and friends at this very sad time,' Celtic said in a statement.

The highpoint of O'Neill's career came in the 1966/67 season when he made 32 appearances as Celtic scooped a rare quadruple which saw them become the first British team to win the European Cup.

O'Neill was a member of the side managed by Jock Stein who defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon.

O'Neill left Celtic in 1969 to join Carlisle before retiring two years later.
