Drogheda United have announced that Mick Cooke has been appointed the club's new manager, bringing to an end an eight-year spell with Monaghan United for the 59-year-old.

Cooke had been in charge of Monaghan since 2003, leading the club to a fantastic campaign last year where they reached the EA Sports Cup final and narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier Division when losing in a play-off against Bray Wanderers.

Cooke proved his ability to get the very best from a team within tight budgetary constraints but he faces a tough season with the Drogs.

Bobby Browne resigned from the post with United on Saturday, sighting differences in opinion over structures within the club.

Cooke will be assisted by former Sporting Fingal coach Robbie Horgan, a former goalkeeper at the Louth side.

Monaghan have yet to comment on the developments.
