As It Happened: Ireland 3-0 Wales

Damien Duff celebrates after scoring Ireland's second goal
Damien Duff celebrates after scoring Ireland's second goal

Full-time The referee blows the final whistle to put Wales out of their misery and confirm a fully deserved and comprehensive victory for Giovanni Trapattoni's Republic of Ireland. Thanks for your comments and insights.

90+3 mins A delightful cross-field ball from Fahey picks out Shane Long on the edge of the Welsh box. Some neat inter-play between him and strike partner Walters splits open the Welsh defence but Long fluffs his volley and it spins away harmlessly.

90 mins Ireland look content to see the game out as the stadium announcer reveals that there'll be four added minutes.

87 mins The pace may have died down but Ireland are still snapping and biting at Welsh ankles everytime they lose possesion. The second half has been one of the best 45 minutes of football Ireland have played in recent times, and a great introduction to international football for Coleman, Clarke and Wilson.

85 mins Darren O'Dea comes on for his fourth international cap as John O'Shea departs. The Manchester United man won't have had as easy a game as this in a long time.

83 mins GOAL A lazy foul on the lively Walters gives Ireland a free-kick just a free-kick a couple of yards out and to slightly to the left of the penalty area. Substitute Keith Fahey steps up and shows some great technique as he strokes it around the wall and past the reach of the diving Hennessey.

81 mins Stoke City's Marc Wilson comes on for his international debut with goalscorer Darron Gibson making way.

79 mins Rob Earnshaw comes off for Jermaine Easter. He's not has the easiest of days, has Earnshaw, with Richard Dunne bossing him in the air and on the ground.

74 mins Trap makes another change bringing on Paul Green for the impressive Glenn Whelan as the game drifts towards that familar friendly feeling. Ireland look content with what they've got and Wales look unable to change things.

The visitors have three corners in a row that don't ammount to much aside from a hopeful long-range Andy King effort.

70 mins Ireland have really upped their game in the second and are passing about the ball for fun. Wales don't look to have any answers at the moment and shorn of the likes of Gareth Bale and Craig Bellamy, look very ordinary.

69 mins Duff is substituted for Andy Keogh, after putting in one of his best shifts in an Irish shirt in a long time.

66 mins GOAL Some shocking defending from Welsh substitute Chris Gunter allows Walters to nick the ball from inside their penalty area. He cuts it back and Shane Long cleverly lets the ball roll across him and into the path of Damien Duff who makes no mistake from six yards out.

62 mins Aodhan O'Faolain scampishly offers: 'At the match and if there were any more empty seats at Aviva you could call this farce the TV3 election debate.'

60 mins GOAL Darron Gibson plays a neat one-two with Whelan, just outside the Welsh penalty area. No-one closes him down so he takes a touch before blasting the ball to the back of the net for his first international goal. An absolute cracker that, in fairness, has been coming.

58 mins Coleman, who has enjoyed a decent debut, comes off for Keith Fahey.

56 mins Ahhh Duffer, you're better than that. Whelan plays the Fulham midfielder through and he's in a one-on-one with Welsh goalkeeper Hennessey but stumbles as he takes his shot which is easily gathered by the shot-stopper.

54 mins Emmm, stewards? Stewards? Any stewards here at all? Two - I believe the local expression is 'muppets' - decide that the game's a bit boring from their seats so they'll have a bit of a stroll about the pitch, which they're allowed to do for about a minute before anyone intervenes.

51 mins Substitute Long spurns a glorious opportunity to open the scoring. Glenn Whelan bursts forward for Ireland and plays Duff into space, who in turn slips in a delightful ball for Long but he can only blast the ball over the crossbar from six yards out. Ireland should be in front.

49 mins Walters really should have done better there. He exchanges passes with Duff before drifting across the edge of the Welsh box and find himself in a great position but can only blast his effort at goalkeeper Hennessey. A waste.

46 mins Shane Long is introduced for Kevin Doyle, while Wales make a change too as Chris Gunter comes on for Neal Ardley. Both sides are allowed six changes in this game, so things might get a bit messy. Wales kick-off and we're back underway.

Half-time Ireland's passing and movement has been impressive up until the final third of the pitch, where it all goes a bit sideways once they get into a promising position. There's been several times when decent crosses have gone into the Welsh box, only for no-one to attack them.

Anyway, nevermind that, anyone know the score in the Eamon Gilmore v Michael Martin match?

Ciaran Boyle, Long Island, NY isn't happy: 'Trap should find a laptop, go on youtube and get them to watch all the clips of Ireland's greatest victories to get them pumped up, because on this performance we need to bring back John Anderson and Ronnie Whelan. I know its not an important game, but come on.'

45+1 mins Doyle cuts into the Welsh penalty area and his low cross is cleared behind for a corner-kick. Gibson sends over another teasing cross, but again, there's no-one there to challenge for it and the Wales clear to safety before the referee blows for half-time.

44 mins Simon Church tests Shay Given with a low and powerful drive from the edge of the Irish penalty area that the Irish goalkeeper can only collect at the second time of asking.

42 mins A neat one-two between O'Shea and Coleman forces Ricketts to put the ball out for a throw deep in side his own half. Ireland fail to make the most of it though and Rob Earnshaw's quick break away is only stopped by a fine challenge from Sean St Ledger. That could have been dangerous.

39 mins Ooooh Ciaran Clarke goes very close for Ireland. Darron Gibson's free-kick on the right is cut-back short to Coleman who sends in a deft cross that Clarke heads just wide. Welsh goalkeeper Hennessey was scambling all the way for it.

37 mins Doyle and Duff combine out on the left wing, as Doyle works his way into a crossing position. His in-swinging ball is met by the head of Coleman, but Danny Collins is right in front of him to block it.

34 mins Wales are slowly working their way into this game, which has gone a bit flat. Duff catches Neal Eardley in possesion and lays the ball off the Doyle who bursts forward and makes room for a shot, but it's a tame one and is easily picked up by Wayne Hennessey.

31 mins Ciaran Clark's trip on Rob Earnshare on the edge of the Irish penalty area gives Wales their first real chance of the game. Earnshaw steps up to take it himself but blazes it well over the bar.

29 mins The game has gone flat and is being played more and more in the middle of the park. A foul by James Collins on Walters gives Ireland a free-kick on the left of the Welsh box, Darron Gibson flashes a tempting cross over but no-one is able to get their head on it.

27 mins Wales appeal for a penalty after Robson-Kanu goes down in the box under a challenge from Coleman. The referee couldn't have been in a better position to see things though and tells the Welshman to get on with it.

24 mins Coleman skips past four Welsh players in midfield with little resistance but his ball to Kevin Doyle comes to naught after a heavy challenge on the Irish striker. The referee waves play-on.

21 mins Walters is full of running up front for Ireland and John O'Shea's lofted through-ball is only just about cut out by Danny Collins.

20 mins Rob Earnshaw looks to have his work cut out for him up front for Wales. He's ploughing a lone furrow against the Irish defence and at 5ft not much" he's going to get a crick in his neck challenging for those high balls against Richard Dunne.

17 mins Coleman's movement is great to watch. He doesn't stand still for a second and is always looking to close someone down or pick up the ball. Ireland are putting together some neat passing movements going forward but so far the final ball hasn't quiet been there.

John Hendrick tells us: "I'm a huge Liverpool supporter but really excited at the prospect of Seamus Coleman pulling on a green jersey for the first time. He's having a great season and hopefully he can make the step up and bring that form to the international stage."

You're not the only one John, Sligo Rovers manager Paul Cook will be rubbing his hands together tonight as Coleman's international debut means that Everton have to make another payment to the Showgrounds club.

14 mins After a frantic start, things appear to be settling with Wales enjoying some possesion for the first time in the game. Blackpool's David Vaughan lifts a free-kick into the Irish box but Wales are a team sorely lacking in height and Richard Dunne clears it away.

10 mins Duff floats the free-kick into the penalty area and it's lifted away but Ireland get another chance after a high challenge on Coleman. Glenn Whelan steps up to strike at goal but it's a poor effort and sails harmlessly over.

8 mins More good stuff from Duff down the left, he looks like he's going to be a real handful tonight. Neal Eardley goes in hard on him as they both challenge for a high ball and the referee blows for a free-kick in a threatening position on the left.

6 mins Coleman is looking bright. He bursts down the right and hits an early cross that is just ahead of the play and Wales scramble the ball away. Ireland keep the pressure on however and Duff, coming in from the left hits an inviting cross that floats over Welsh goalkeeper Henderson and just clips the back post.

4 mins Hal Robson-Kanu scampers down the right-hand side but Seamus Coleman stops him dead in his tracks. Ireland look to break early and Damien Duff is played into space but the assistant referee flags for offside. That was tight and replays show he might have got it wrong.

2 mins A lively start from Ireland with John Walters looking to link up with the midfield from the start. A foul on Walters gives the home side a free-kick on the right side of the Welsh half, which Damien Duff lifts in. It's only cleared as far as Glenn Whelan on the edge of the Welsh box but his attempted chip sails over. That was a decent chance.

1 min John O'Shea was giving Amhrán na bhFiann a fair oul belt there. The anthems have been sung, the pennants exchanged and Ireland kick-off.

19:38 Shay Given and James Collins lead out their sides on a wet and windy night in Dublin, but there's still a lot more empty seats than occupied.

Mark Russell and Ciaran Boyle are following the game from New York, while Paul Grainger is checking in from Boston. We'll have no Yankees v Red Sox carry-on from you lads now.

19:35 Craig Bellamy has travelled with the Welsh squad, despite being out injured. The official line is that he's there for 'morale' but you have to believe that the lure of a midweek break in Temple Bar and a trip to Lillies was too much for him to turn down.

19:32 Ouch, with less that 15 minutes to kick-off there's only a smattering of spectators inside the Aviva Stadium. Looks like all levels of the stadium are open to fans too, so even if there are the expected 30,000 they're going to be spread out all over the place leaving a flat atmosphere.

19:25 Ken Richardson is following the action from Tulsa, Oklahoma where he's hoping for 'a solid performance and a win'.

I'm oddly optimistic about this one myself, I think the combination of Irish debutants and fringe players eager to make an impression coupled with Gary Speed taking charge of the Welsh side for the first time could leave us with an open and exciting game.

19:18 Manchester United's Darron Gibson has been given the nod ahead of Paul Green in midfield, after Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni left it to the last minute to decide between them.

Trapattoni has handed both Seamus Coleman and Ciaran Clark what many believe to be a long overdue debut.

However the much vaunted Carling Nations Cup hasn't exactly captured the public's imagination and despite a reduction in ticket prices, there's seems to be plenty on empty seats in the Aviva Stadium.

New Wales manager Gary Speed has gone for an attacking formation and line-up.

Robbie Earnshaw will play up front along with Reading duo Simon Church and Simon Robson-Kanu in a 4-3-3 formation.

Republic of Ireland v Wales at the Aviva Stadium in the Carling Nations Cup (7.45pm):

Ireland: Shay Given, John O'Shea, Sean St Ledger, Richard Dunne, Ciaran Clark, Seamus Coleman, Glenn Whelan, Paul Green or Darron Gibson, Damien Duff, Jonathan Walters, Kevin Doyle.
