Bohemians fell to another defeat at Dalymount Park with Stephen O'Donnell putting Galway on the way to a famous victory

Nine-man Galway United secured their second away league win of the season over Bohemians following an incident-packed match at Dalymount Park.

Stephen O'Donnell's free kick put Galway ahead on 42 minutes but Rhys Meynell sent off for striking Owen Heary as O'Donnell prepared to take the kick.

Derek O'Brien scored the second on 58 minutes with a close range finish past Chris O'Connor before Paul Sinnott was dismissed on 74 minutes after a tackle on Killian Brennan.

With Bohemians' current precarious financial state meaning they may need to sell some big names to balance the books it was no surprise to see cross-channel scouts in Dublin 7.

Representatives from Millwall, Watford, Derby County and Peterborough United were amongst the crowd though they saw Paddy Madden, who has been the subject of much transfer speculation, start from the bench.

There was little to impress the English visitors in the early exchanges, indeed the first spark of excitement came on 20 minutes when Jason Byrne was put through on goal at the Shopping Centre end but he fluffed his lines and hammered the ball wide to the right of Barry Ryan’s goal.

The Bohs faithful were voicing their displeasure at their side's failure to break down a tough Galway midfield and defence as the half progressed.

This was well exemplified when Ciaran Foley got back on 24 minutes to block Raffaele Cretaro's path to goal after the former Sligo Rovers man was put in by Brian Shelley.

Galway then repelled several Bohs corners as the half progressed while Rhys Meynell cleared off the line from Paul Keegan as Bohs pilled on the pressure.

United keeper Barry Ryan then kept out Keegan with his legs on the double as Bohs continued the onslaught but it was the visitors who went ahead, against the run of play, on 42 minutes.

O'Donnell's stunning free kick rocketed into the corner of the net to O'Connor's right but Galway were down to ten men by then though as Meynell was dismissed by referee Damien Hancock before the kick was taken.

Assistant Marc Douglas waived is flag furiously to bring Hancock's attention to pushing and shoving in the area as O'Donnell prepared to take the kick and Meynell was dismissed for striking Heary.

Galway boss Sean Connor immediately made a tactical change before the break, introducing Philip Reilly for Tom King.

Bohs returned to the pitch early for the second half and warmed up away from their fans on the empty Connaught Street side of the ground. Galway trotted back several minutes later, looking like men who knew it would be backs to the wall stuff for the next 45 minutes.

They needn't have worried though as they started well and doubled their lead on 58 minutes when Jamie McKenzie's ball swung across the six yard box and through the Bohs defence where O'Brien pounced to smashed it past O’Connor

Ruaidhri Higgins went close to getting Bohs back into contention on 62 minutes but crashed his free kick off the crossbar. From a similar position at the other end, O'Donnell sent his free kick well off target on 69.

Galway were then reduced to nine men on 74 minutes, rather harshly the visiting fans felt, when Sinnott was shown the red card following a tackle on Brennan.

Bohs later introduced Madden, along with Aaron Greene and Glenn Cronin, but Galway held on for their second win at Dalymount Park this season. Their small group of visiting fans cheered them off but a chorus of boos greeted Bohs as they left the field.
