Sad Finale for Zidane

Zidane receives his red card

Zidane conjured up a masterful display as the French dismissed favourites Brazil in the quarter-final, before easing past Portugal in the last four en route to the final against Italy in Berlin.

The then Real Madrid player, who had announced his intention to retire from football after the German World Cup, was awarded the 'Golden Ball' as the best player of the competition.

In the final itself, Zidane put the French ahead from the spot after seven minutes before the Italians equalised later in the opening half.

The game subsequently went into extra time where Zidane was to suffer the ignominy of being sent-off following a headbutt on on Marco Materazzi following verbal taunts and insults from the Italian. To add to the French pain, the Azzuri went on to claim the trophy 5-3 on penalties.

Zidane has come out publicly to state that he will never apologise to Materazzi for the headbutt in the final.
