Brazil, who had controlled most of the second half, were awarded a corner which was floated into the box. Zico connected with it superbly and sent the ball flying into the net to the joy of Brazilian players and fans alike.
However, just as Zico kicked the ball towards the goal, referee Clive Thomas amazingly blew his whistle, less than 15 seconds into injury time and refused to allow the goal to stand.
Thomas was surrounded by both sets of players and pelted with coins by Brazilian fans but refused to let the goal stand.
