9.45pm Thanks for all your comments, as always. I hope you enjoyed the coverage and if you're a Man U fan, hard luck!

See y'after good people.

9.43pm Bayern Munich will play Lyon in the Champions League semi-final. The French team lost 1-0 to Bordeaux tonight, but go through 3-2 on aggregate.

9.39pm That's it folks, Fergie and co are out of Europe.

They played superbly in the first half, but they went asleep to concede at the end of the first half.

When Rafael was sent off Man United just could not cope with the waves of Bayern attacks.

Ribery and Robben terrorised the United full backs from then on. Robben's crucial goal was so, so good - a deserving winner of the tie.

Ultimately the United midfield was non-existent, those who say that Carrick and Fletcher are the midfield supremos of the Premier League may have to think again after tonight's display.

90+3 mins Ribery gives the ball away and United break. They lose it. Bayern go downfield again. Ribery is fouled, but there is no time for the free-kick as the full-time whistle is blown. Man United are out of the Champions League.

RESULT: MAN UNITED 3-2 BAYERN MUNICH (AGG 4-4) -BAYERN MUNICH WIN ON AWAY GOALS.

90+2 mins Ribery has it, on the left wing. He takes it the corner of the pitch and wins a corner.

90+2 mins Foul from Vidic on Ribery, I think!

90+1 mins Three minutes of stoppages to be played.

90 mins United look beaten, but are they.

89 mins Ribery shoots from 25 yards. Just wide. He has been very influential in the second half, if not mesmeric.

At the other end Nani has a go. He drags his shot just wide.

87 mins Bayern are holding onto the ball, passing it from the Man U penalty area right back to the goalkeeper Butt. That is the kind of time-wasting technique that drives my housemate mad when we are playing FIFA on the Playstation!

86 mins This is tense, tense, tense.

85 mins Nani dribbles 15 yards and lays it off to Giggs, he tries to pass through to Evra, but the ball is intercepted. O'Shea to Valencia. Valencia slips the ball through to the penalty area for Berbatov, but the Bulgarian fails to reach it and Butt collects.

84 mins Olic is off for Pranjic. Gomez to lead the line alone.

83 mins United are failing to string any passes together

83 mins Schweinsteiger lays the ball off Ribery, he blasts over the bar. Hamit Altintop is on for Robben.

82 mins Ferdinand and Gomez tangle. Ferdinand pushes Gomez off the ball. Cheeky.

81 mins Ryan Giggs now on for Gibson.

80 mins Carrick was guilty of a terrible miss earlier, how he may regret that.

79 mins Berbatov is coming on for Carrick.

79 mins Berbatov is coming on. For who though?

78 mins Can United score? If not, they are out. They have been on the back foot since Rafael was sent off on 50 minutes.

77 mins That goal was Zidane-like from Robben. So good.

73 mins Gomez and Van Bommel combine, the latter sends Robben free on the right, he cuts into the box, his shot is deflected. Corner to Bayern. Cleared another corner. Ribery takes the corner, he fires it to the far side of the box, a full 20 yards from goal. Robben watches it all the way and strikes the ball on the volley. It is the sweetest strike possible and flies sweet and true into the bottom left-hand corner, Van Der Saar stretching for it but can't make it. Goal for Robben.

GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 3-2 BAYERN MUNICH

73 mins

"Rooney the white Pele"

Guy Leadbetter

71 mins Schweinsteiger has a shot from 20 yards, decent shot, but straight at Van der Sar. United break the length of the pitch. Nani feeds Gibson who shoots from outside the box. A good effort but, handy enough for Butt to claim.

70 mins Robben again, this time he feeds Schweinsteiger. He feeds Ribery on the left. No way through, so he feeds Robben, it is blocked and goes back to Lahm. Bayern are stroking it around, toying with United and looking for a gap.

69 mins Robben finally beats Evra, but Gibson doubles up and herds him out.

68 mins Gomez gets on the end of a cross and directs his header just over the bar. He has been a huge danger since coming on.

68 mins "Bayern Munich forever!!!"

"3-3 on the night 5-4 on agg to Munich! "

Philip O'Flannabhra

67 mins Bayern are all hands to the pump. Throw to the Germans. They lose it and Carrick sends a long ball for Nani to chase. Demechelis intercepts.

66 mins Ribery and Van Bommel are pulling the strings for Bayern trying to find space. Robben is having a hard time getting past Evra.

65 mins It came down for Fletcher. He shoots, it's deflected wide. Another corner. It reaches Carrick at the near post. Unmarked he blasts it over the bar.

64 mins It's all Bayern, United are sitting deep and blocking everything. Evra wins the ball and plays the ball over the top to Nani. He beats the offside trap and races in on goal. He fires from six yards, but Butt saves. Corner to United.

63 mins Van Bommel feeds Robben on the right wing. Evra forces him to pass back to Lahm.

62 mins Ribery is fouled by Valencia Finally the Frenchman is playing.

61 mins Badstuber crosses and Vidic puts it out for a corner. Robery takes it. Gomez gets a head to it but is always underneath the ball and Van der Sar claims with ease.

60 mins Gibson hoofs the ball downfield, route one from him.

59 mins Van Der Saar again to the rescue. A through ball is 50-50 with he and Olic, but the 'keeper clears.

58 mins Bayern are so much more assured in this half. Although Ribery is still quiet. Does he have a surprise for us all in store. As I write he unleashes a superb shot at Van der Sar - the Dutchman saves.

57 mins Great game here now. Chances at both ends, and gaps appearing. Could go either way.

56 mins bleedin starving here with mur, duff and seamo - consy is meant to be making us dinner - come on cons! and go bayern

TJ O'Grady - Peyton

55 mins John O'Shea is on for Rooney. One of the greatest players in the world exchanged for another!

53 mins Badstuber is booked for a foul. He's rubbish, sorry Holger! Free-kick to United, Fletcher takes the free and it reaches Nani. He fires it over, but not far away.

52 mins Van Bommel loves the long ball. He tries another which is headed clear by United. He's gotta do better than that.

50 mins Rafael pulls the back of Ribery's jersey as he runs towards goal. He is booked. Combined with the yellow for fouling Van Bommel earlier that means he is off.

RED CARD FOR MANCHESTER UNITED'S RAFAEL.

49 mins Rooney tries to find Valencia, but his pass is way over-cooked and intercepted by Badstuber.

48 mins Robbern beats Nani and passes across field to Schweinsteiger. Ribery is fed the ball and wins a corner. Ribery tries to beat Nani from the corner, he loses the ball and it's a throw to Man U.

47 mins Gomes gets a first run. He tries to pull a ball to Ribery in the box, but it is intercepted.

46 mins Rooney is still on.

8.49pm Mario Gomez is on for Thomas Muller.

8.48pm The teams are coming out. We hear Rooney will continue.

8.42pm RTÉ are focusing on the Bayern fightback. It was really impressive. More impressive was the dominance of United though. The defence ensnared Robben and Ribery and made those great players look ordinary.

With their tails up though I would not rule out another goal, the question is can their defence hold United out. Our German friend Badstuber looks like he would struggle to make it into the Shamrock Rovers under-14 team. If United probe his flank they should score again.

The other key question is will Rooney stay on.

8.40pm Getting quite a lot of requests to publish the comment:

ROOOOOOOONEY!

Thanks Tom Fox and Guy Leadbetter. Insightful!

8.37pm My colleague Lochlann Mac a' Bháird insists I mention that in the build-up to United's third there was a foul throw. Gotta keep the colleagues happy!

8.34pm A cracker of a 45 minutes there. United were out of the blocks with incredible intensity and deserved their early lead. All credit to Bayern for sticking at it and Olic was his predatory best to steal that goal.

Holger Badstuber - the most German sounding, German-named person I've heard of - is looking very ropey and the back. Valencia and Rafael are taking turns at roasting him up the wing.

45+3 mins Lahm wins the ball from Nani and feeds Muller, but he loses it.

Rafael runs at Demechelis, he is beaten and Valencia whips the ball into the box. It is cleared and it is now half-time.

HALF TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 3-1 BAYERN MUNICH (AGG 4-3)

Great first half.

45+2 mins Bordeaux are 1-0 up against Lyon. They still trail by a goal on aggregate.

45+1 mins Robben runs twenty yards at Vidic and beats him. He unleashes a shot and Van der Saar palms it away. Bayern are renewed all of a sudden.

45 mins Olic has another pop at goal. Van der Saar collects with ease.

43 mins Bayern break downfield. Muller gets a head to the ball which reaches his strike partner Olic. He gets the better of Carrick in a one-on-one tussle and with only Van der Saar to beat, Olic slips the ball into the far corner. Great finished, terrible concentration from Man U and poor tackling and strength from Carrick. Goal for Olic.

GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 3-1 BAYERN MUNICH

40 mins Valencia is fed a throw-in, he beats Badstuber and pops the ball over Van Buyten, then delivers a superb cross across the face of goal to Nani. He hits it first time into the top right corner of the net. Second goal for Nani.

GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 3-0 BAYERN MUNICH

39 mins Nani takes a free on the right wing. Into the box and cleared by Demechelis. Bayern break quickly and Olic is fed the ball by Muller on the left edge of the penalty area. He closes in on goal, but his touch takes the ball too far ahead of him and Van der Saar commits and clears. Great 'keeping from a great 'keeper.

38 mins Lahm takes a quick pass and loses the ball. Bayern are awful at the minute.

37 mins Muller breaks from inside Bayern's half and is fouled by Nani.

36 mins Badstubber and Robben attempt to interchange passes - the ball is intercepted.

34 mins Bayern pass it around midfield. Ribery tries to beat Rafael the ball is intercepted. He passes it off and makes a run. The ball is played back in to him with only the keeper to beat. He can square for Rooney, but no, he goes himself. His shot is an embarassing effort that scuffles wide. Poor Rafael, mate. Mental note for the young lad: 'Always pass to Rooney.'

33 mins Gibson has another go from 30 yards. This one is a shocker though. He puts it in the carpark.

32 mins Valencia again beats Badstuber and Demechelis gets a challenge in to prevent Valencia getting into the box. A corner is won. However, when crosses in it is smashed over the bar.

32 mins By the way, it's 0-0 in the Bordeaux-Lyon match.

31 mins Carrick is being given an eye test. He doesn't look great.

30 mins Carrick and Schweinsteiger have collided and the Englishman is down injured.

29 mins Valencia is set free on the right, a last minute Badstuber tackles saves Bayern.

29 mins Looked like "Traditional toe poke" by Gibson. Much underestimated
skill!!!
Noel Derry

27 mins Yellow card for Van Bommel, he will miss the semi final first leg if Bayern get there. He kicked the back of Fletcher's leg.

25 mins Evra fouls Van Bommel while stretching for a pass. Ribery gets the ball, he passes to Van Buyten. Bayern are passing it slowly around trying to build something. Robben cuts inside Evra. Van Bommel to Ribery. It's passes back to Schweinsteiger who shots from 35 yards. Rubbish shot, hits a few legs and Evra clears.

25 mins Rooney is barely moving. Berbatov is warming up too. Rooney is coming off for sure it seems.

24 mins Nani has a go from 25 yards on the left side of goal. It's way over the bar.

23 mins Badstubber is beaten by Valencia. The left-back is being eaten alive by his opposite number.

22 mins Macheda warms up on the touchline.

21 mins Rooney is limping. He is starting to feel his ankle it seems. He was kicked by Van Buyten and it looks like he is going to come off.

20 mins Louis van Gall looks calm in the stands. One goal and Bayern are level on aggregate. At the moment it is 3-2 on aggregate.

19 mins Lahm to Van Buyten, who feeds Robben. A long ball from Van Bommel comes to nothing.

18 mins United are in total control. Bayern are trying to slow the game down and as a result quiet the crowd. Van Bommel challenges Gibson and the ball is in touch.

Rafael fouls Van Bommel and gets a yellow card.

17 mins Gibson breaks down the right anc crosses to the box. Van Buyten puts it out for a corner. Vidic comes up for it. Gibson takes it, it reaches Rooney at the far post, but he heads in into the stands.

16 mins Ribery feeds Muller on the right wing. Rafael intercepts a pass and is fouled by Ribery. United free-kick.

15 mins Fletcher feeds Nani on the left, Lahm challenges and it's out for a throw. The throw is rubbish though and gets cleared.

14 mins Bayern are yet to register a shot on goal.

13 mins Nani up the left, Robben wins a challenge and the ball goes into touch off Nani.

12 mins Butt gives the ball away while trying to clear in his box. It falls to Carrick who shoots from 30 yards. The keeper was off his line and Carrick should have done better, but hits it wide.

12 mins Lahm foulded by Evra. Bayern just can't find any momentum at all.

11 mins Ribery loses it to Valencia, who passes to Gibson. Schweinsteiger kicks the ball into touch off Gibson. Goal kick for Bayern.

10 mins Throw for Bayern in their half. Van Bommel finds Demechelis, Rafael fouls Ribery from behind, free to Bayern.

8 mins Robben goes down under a Nani tackle. Should have been a yellow card for Nani. He gets away with it.

7 mins What a start. United are killling them everywhere. Bayern can't get a look in at the minute.

6 mins Rooney plays a wide ball to Valencia. He whips the ball into the box and Nani gets a flick on the ball inside the six-yard box. it hits the bottom corner. Goal! Nani the scorer.

GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 BAYERN MUNICH

5 mins Corner to Man U. Ferdinand is up for it. The crowd is roaring. Butt fists the cross away. Pressure still on. Nani delivers a cross which is cleared by Van Buyten.

3 mins Rooney and Darren Gibson combine just outside the penalty area. Quick one two move. The defence stands off Gibson and he smacks it. The keeper doesn't move. 1-0 to United! Gibson the scorer!

GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 BAYERN MUNICH

3 mins A long ball from Van der Saar is headed back to Ferdinand, who returns the ball to his 'keeper.

2 mins Ferdinand and Evra build and attack which is cut-out.

1min We're off. Bayern in black, United are in red.

7.45pm Rooney looks relaxed and eager to add to his 34 goals this season.

7.44pm Old Trafford is packed to the rafters and looks awesome.

7.44pm Van Bommel and Ferdinand exchange handshakes and penants.

7.43pm The Champions League tune is played. The crowd roars. Hands are shaked, we're almost ready for some fußball.

7.42pm John Giles thinks Rooney will see United into the last four. Ray Houghton agrees, but is not totally convinced. He says it's all down to Rooney. Eamon Dunphy backs up the other pundits.

7.42pm Munich to go through. I hope...

frank, edinburgh.

7.41pm The team are in the tunnel.

7.38pm For the record, Martín Demichelis has played for Argentina 24 times, hitting the back of the onion sack once.

7.37pm Osa Godwin is none too happy with Eamon Dunphy's pre-match chat, she says:

Can someone tell Mr. Dunphy that Martin Demichelis is a central defender, and even play in the central defence for his country Argentina.
Please get your facts right Mr. Dunphy or ring me for facts about FC Bayern

7.32pm The RTÉ panel are so impressed with Mr Messi they are spending all the build-up time analysing him. You can't blame them really!

7.29pm Gary Neville has yet to be offered a new contract for next season. That fact, combined with his being dropped tonight, points to a potential retirement for the elder Neville brother. Or maybe I am selling him short.

7.25pm RTÉ are showing highlights of last night. Dear Lord, Messi was good. Watching the highlights you would have to say, bar Messi's contribution, Arsenal were not totally outplayed. A team with Van Persie, Arshavin, Song, Gallas and Fabregas would have given Barca a real test.

7.24pm Referee Nicola Rizzoli is reasonably card happy. The Italian has brandished 15 yellow cards, but no reds, in the Champions League this season.

7.23pm There are a few players on the edge of suspension going into tonight's clash. They are as follows:

Man United: Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, Nemanja Vidic.

Bayern: Holger Badstuber, Danijel Pranjic, Mark van Bommel.

7.17pm Eamon Dunphy reckons Bayern won't have the guts to pass their way through the United defence. Personally, I reckon the triumvirate of Robben, Schweinsteiger and Ribery do have the guts and Bayern will breach the United defence at least once. However, with Rooney in the team, once may not be enough for the Bavarians.

7.14pm Lest you forget there is another tie taking place tonight too. It's the French derby, with Bordeaux hosting Lyon. Laurent Blanc's team have a 3-1 defecit to overturn from the first leg. That's gonna be a tricky tie for the former Man United's star's team.

7.12pm My two colleagues here predict two different results. Rory has gone for 3-1 to United. Donal believes Bayern will go through. What do you think?

7.08pm No place for Hamit Altintop in the Bayern side. Schweinstegier and Robben in. These two lads are surely the danger men for United's rearguard.

7.07pm The final teams are in:

Manchester United: 1-Edwin van der Sar; 21-Rafael, 5-Rio Ferdinand, 15-Nemanja Vidic, 3-Patrice Evra; 24-Darren Fletcher, 16-Michael Carrick, 28-Darron Gibson; 25-Antonio Valencia, 10-Wayne Rooney, 17-Nani.

Bayern Munich: 22-Hans-Joerg Butt; 21-Philipp Lahm, 5-Daniel Van Buyten, 6-Martin Demichelis, 28-Holger Badstuber; 10-Arjen Robben, 17-Mark van Bommel, 31-Bastian Schweinsteiger, 7-Franck Ribery; 25-Thomas Mueller, 11-Ivica Olic.

Referee: Nicola Rizzoli (Italy)

7.05pm So Rooney has been included. We've been debating this in the office today and the general consensus was he would play some part. Good old Hairdryer Fergie playing the old mind games again. What a wily old Scottish fox he is.

6.59pm Gary Neville has been dropped with Rafael coming in.

6.55pm Rooney's fitness has been the subject of speculation ever since he limped off with an ankle injury in the Allianz Arena last week.

Alex Ferguson stated the England star had 'no chance' of being involved but the wiley Scot has produced a major surprise. John O'Shea is on the bench.

6.47pm Wayne Rooney will start alongside Darron Gibson.

6.45pm: Preview - Manchester United v Fußball-Club Bayern München: a battle of two of Europe’s most cultured and renowned soccer powerhouses whets the appetite something crazy.

The first leg clash produced a fascinating if not always lively tie. A Wayne Rooney goal after 66 seconds left the Mancunian side in a position of comfort for almost the duration of the match.

That early goal put the onus on the Bavarian team to attack at will – an offer they duly accepted. First half chances for Hamit Altintop and Ivica Olic were not taken and it seemed as though Bayern would go to the north of England with a mountain to climb.

However, two late strikes - Franck Ribery's deflected free-kick and an Olic moment of magic - changed all that and now it is Alex Ferguson’s charges who have it all to do in their clash at the Theatre of Dreams. They must also accomplish this without the help of star striker Rooney, who limped off with a late ankle injury at the Allianz Arena last Tuesday.

Appetite whetted – good.

Just to add a further pinch of spice - chew on this. Man United have never beaten German opposition in a two-legged encounter during Sir Alex Ferguson's time in charge.

For those signed-up members of the geeky stat-attack society, here are some interesting facts about the clubs in action.

Manchester United have won three European Cups in 1968, 1999 and 2008. Bayern is even more successful in Europe’s premier club competition. The German club have won four European Cup titles in 1974, 1975, 1976 and 2001.

Domestically, Manchester United have won 18 English league titles and 11 FA Cups. Domestically, Bayern also trump their competitors’ trophy haul. They have won 21 German league titles and 14 domestic cups.
