Result: Bayern Munich 2-1 Man Utd
2143 That injury to Rooney looked serious enough. Mario Gomez stood down on his right foot - Rooney was behind him and Gomez planted his foot hard to take off on a run and Rooney looked in considerable pain. Is it his metatarsal again? More news will follow on RTÉ.ie as we have it. Thanks for staying with us this evening. That's all, good night.
2142 Lyon have taken a 3-1 lead into the second leg after their quarter-final first leg against Bordeaux.
2140 The last goal - Van Bommel drove at the Man Utd defence and he was crowded out. Evra had the ball and had a chance to clear, but the usually excellent full back had looked sluggish all night long and he was found out here - Olic nipped in from the wing, robbed the statue that was Evra, took the ball into space and coolly sent Van der Sar the wrong way to score.
2137 Wow! What an ending! I've only noticed how many times I've typed Van der Sar's name - he was really very, very busy in the second half. Most of the saves were comfortable, granted, but Bayern were on top the entire second half and deserved the win on possession and chances created and, most importantly, they were trying to win it. Man Utd sat back on their lead and offered absolutely nothing going forward. I maintain that had they continued to attack, they could have won this game easily, but that was the manager's choice and it's backfired.
2135 Full time whistle. More bad news for United as Rooney limps off, unable to put any weight on his right foot.
2134 In literally the last second of the game, Olic steals in and robs the ball off the toe of Evra in United's box and calmly slots home past Van der Sar. Awful defending at the death, cool finish, deserved win.
GOAL FOR BAYERN
2132 Another late chance, Mario Gomez turns Rio Ferdinand and gets his shot off at a tough angle, it's on target, but Van der Sar is up to it.
2131 Finally, in the last minute, Philip Lahm whips in an excellent cross in front of goal, but neither Gomez nor Klose can stretch their legs enough to poke it home.
2130 Three minutes left now - time for the ghost of Teddy & Solksjaer to appear?
2128 Veteran striker Miroslav Klose comes on for Bayern's second best player Hamit Altintop. Best has been Ribery. The Turkish winger must've been knackered, otherwise it's madness to take him off - he's been dangerous all night.
2127 Man U are now defending crazy deep, but Bayern's crosses continue to be rubbish.
2125 Giggs' corner finds the head of Vidic and he flakes one against the bar - that was an inch away from a second away goal. Shut my mouth.
2124 Ferguson has brought on Berbatov, Valencia and Giggs, but there were only three in the box for that free. To chase or not to chase?
2123 Free kick in a dangerous position at the edge of the box for Man U now, after Nani's dive. The Portuguese winger is subbed and Giggs comes on.
2121 Bayern on the up now, Lahm turns inside and leaves Nani on his arse, but the cross is just too high for Gomez.
2120 In France, Lyon take a 3-1 lead. Lisandro Lopez's second comes from the penalty spot after a handball, presumably nowhere near as blatant as Neville's.
2119 Neville's handball was loony tunes stuff. The ball bounces up to head height and he just reaches up and slapped at it. Crazy stuff and it is wicked costly.
2118 Ribery's free kick goes into the wall and is deflected horribly into the corner of Van der Sar's goal. The Dutch keeper can do nothing. 15 minutes left and it's game on.
GOAL FOR BAYERN
2118 Gary Neville's ludicrous handball on the edge of his box gives Ribery a chance to equalise for Bayern.
2117 Not to flog a dead horse or anything, but Berbatov has been on five minutes and is already 'conserving energy' up front with Rooney.
2115 Thomas Muller goes off for Bayern - ineffective performance - and is replaced by striker Mario Gomez. Despite sucking at the last World Cup, Gomez is a consistent goalscorer in the Bundesliga.
2114 Lovely interplay in the box from Bayern's forwards, a neat backheel opens it up for Olic to shoot at the near post, but Van der Sar gets down well to save the day.
2112 Two subs on for Man U, Berbatov and Valencia on, Park and Carrick off - attacking moves and maybe Ferguson finally realises that he can win the tie tonight. Let's see if the visitors go for it.
2109 Pranjic has another crack from long range, Scholes gets there in time to block it, but the ball balloons out over Van der Sar's goal for a corner, which is easily cleared. If anything, Bayern are now looking less likely to score than in the first half.
2107 Ribery looks really dangerous every time he gets the ball, but he's dropping very deep to instigate the attacks rather than receiving it in the box.
2103 Bayern are playing well, creating chances, but nothing really clear cut this half. Man U are defending well enough, but I don't think it's too unfair to say that Barca would've scored a hatload of goals against them by now. The fact remains that when they attack as a team, Man U do look like they can score, but they are playing quite defensively and leaving Rooney to work hard up top on his own. They could definitely kill off the game tonight if they were more positive.
2101 Great skill from Ribery - hauls down a long, high pass on his toe, turns Neville & Nani inside and out with some electric close control, but Nani, amazingly, manages to steal it off him and clear, just in time.
2059 End-to-end stuff here - Rooney tears off towards the Bayern goal but loses possession and Van Bommel then takes it up and runs most of the pitch and lets fly with a savage hit - straight at Van der Sar. Chances ahoy.
2058 Turkish winger Altintop has the making of a sluggish-looking Evra, he twists and turns his way into the United box, beating two other defenders and then unleashing a fierce drive, but it's straight at Van der Sar.
2055 Again Altintop burns Evra, again his cross is poor. Too much juice this time.
2053 Muller's long-range effort gets a deflection off a defender's leg and wrong-foots Van der Sar - it's going in, but the Dutch veteran gets down really well to save his side.
2051 Bayern coming out of the traps hard here - another terrific break down the left from Ribery sets Pranjic free, but he can't find the telling pass.
2048 Ferocious start from Bayern - Ribery runs half the pitch down the wing, breaks inside towards the box and slips a delicious bal into Olic, who swivels and blasts from a narrow angle, but Van der Sar is equal to it. That leads to two corners for Bayern, but they can't find a way through.
2047 Here we go again folks. Second half - no changes on either side at the break.
2040 Looking again at Olic's miss for Bayern, the ball came to him with a fair amount of pace on it and it wasn't travelling straight, but regardless, he would've have converted that 9 times out of 10. Except this was the tenth time. Really shocking miss - he actually moved his foot out of the way of the ball in trying to connect.
2038 Looking at the replay of Rooney's goal, it's really smart exploitation of the man-marking system. Just before the cross comes in, everyone steps away from goal, bringing their marker with them, leaving an enormous hole in front of goal, which Rooney runs into and the ball lands on his foot. Really smart goal. It helped that Rooney's marker slipped, but he still would've scored.
2031 And it's half-time in Germany. Chances at both ends, with Bayern constructing several decent openings but being unable to finish them off. Man U always look capable of scoring on the break and their final ball in is infinitely better than the home side's. There really should be more goals in this game and it's likely there will be in the second half.
2028 Again a long ball out of defence is run down by Rooney and he works it around to open a chance for Carrick to shoot. It's blocked down, but the Bayern defenders are rubbish at clearing their lines. Bayern aren't trying long balls like that because they know Vidic and/or Ferdinand would deal with it comfortably. Not so the home defence so far.
2026 Five minutes to half-time, by the way.
2024 Good God, what a chance for Rooney. Fletcher floats in an easy cross, Demichelis goes up for the header, misses it completely and it falls to Rooney inside the six yard box. He controls it, has all the time in the world and plays it straight at the advancing keeper. Chance gone. I suspect he was as surprised as everyone else that Demichelis missed the header.
2021 Rooney throws himself to the floor in dramatic fashion, arms thrown to heaven and all. Dive, and the ref gets it right. Boo to that, he's too good for that kind of jive.
2019 Pranjic tries his luck from 30 yards, good hit, but it's straight at Van der Sar. Man U seem happy enough to soak up pressure, but Bayern are raising their game now.
2018 2-1 to Lyon in France. Michel Bastos scores for the home side.
2015 Bayern captain Marc Van Bommel drives through the middle for a good 30 yards, links up with Ribery and almost works his way through in on goal, but is cut out. Pace picking up now from the home side as they press for an equaliser. Good game now, higher tempo.
2014 Ribery skins Gary Neville and, guess what, his cross is pants, but the ball breaks to Altintop, whose mishit shot sails to Olic and the Croat striker misses it completely from about two yards. Chance on the match so far. Terrible miss.
2012 Hello to Brian, staying with us from Mindanao in the Philippines and also to Gabe from California.
2010 They're starting to knock a little louder are the home side - Ribery floats in a spectacular ball over the Man U defence to find Altintop, who had cut in from the wing, but the Turkish player can't bring it under control. If he had - goal time.
2008 Nani's cross from the byline drops onto the top of the crossbar. If it goes in, magic, otherwise, bad cross.
2007 As I say that, Ribery finds himself in some space outside the box in front of goal and he lets fly. Van der Sar is worked, diving low and left, but he gathers it.
2006 Sustained possesion from Bayern, comfortably knocking it around, but their final ball has been muck every time.
2004 Update from France, it's already 1-1 in Lyon, Lopez's tap-in game the home side the lead, but Chamakh's header levels matters for Bordeaux.
2003 Scholes special on Altintop, very high foot finds its way onto the Turk's thigh with some force. No booking. It did look like an accident, to be fair.
2002 Long ball out of defence finds Rooney on the break, but his effort is blocked. Fletcher then sets Nani free in the box. but he can't dig out a decent shot from a great position and it crawls wide of the post - great chance.
2000 As Nani is United's favoured avenue of attack so far, so too Altintop and Lahm down the right for Bayern and they're getting crosses into the box almost every time, but none of these are proving threatening balls. So far.
1959 First corner to Bayern and Demichelis ghosts in on the back post and has a free header, which he sends high and wide. Like I said, howler.
1958 Uh-oh, United try to play it out of defence, lose it, and Olic and Altintop nearly fashion an opening as a result.
1956 Bayern just can't hold onto the ball at the moment and United are floating everything out to Nani at every opportunity. Weak spot there, do they reckon?
1954 Altintop breezes past Evra on the right hand side, but his cross is blocked down. Lahm's subsequent cross sails out, but there was some pretty easy access to the United penalty area there.
1952 Things have calmed down a bit after that ferocious start, but Man U are knocking around sharply. Park receives the ball inside the box and his centre opens up a shooting chance for old ginger warrior Scholes, who skies it.
1949 Demichelis, in his Mexican wrestlers' mask, has had, to put it mildly, a poor start. A howler, to be honest. Brainless foul on Nani in a non-threatening position, then he lets the one man you cannot let free off the leash at the first attack. If he continues to 'man-mark' Rooney like that, young Wayne will enjoy a feast of chances this evening.
1947 Nani gets up from the foul, dusts himself off, floats in a great free kick to the back pass and Rooney gets free from his defender - who slipped - and taps home. 1 minute. 1-0. Easy peasy.
GOAL FOR MAN UTD!
1946 Straight away, masked avenger Demechelis hacks the bejaysis out of Nani down by the corner flag. Ouch.
1946 We're off at the Allianz Arena.
1945 Before we get underway, a big hello to all the international readers out there, drop us a line to the address above and let us know where you are.
1943 Bayern defender Demichelis is wearing the most awesome face mask. It's like a Beano artist's impression of a robber. I do hope he takes to the field with a bag that's got SWAG scrawled across it. Unlikely.
1942 Here we go, the players take to the field and line out with their short-term adopted children.
1940 Players have to walk down a load of steep steps to get to the pitch at the Allianz Arena. Wonder if anyone's ever come a cropper there pre-match.
1935 Scuttlebutt here around Castle Montrose has it that Thierry Henry will head to New York and the MLS next year and also that our national captain Robbie Keane could be off there as well. Rumourtastic.
1933 The local fans are generating a decent atmosphere, all holding pints. Imagine that in the north of England. Yikes.
1930 15 minutes until kick-off folks.
1928 In interview, Ferguson praises Park's defensive capability and explains that Nani's ability to play both sides was why he was preferred to Valencia. Offered a choice between a goal and a clean sheet, he immediately answers 'goal'. Too right.
1925 Ruud Gullit's unique take on English grammar continues unchecked on the Sky panel. Where great players who became failed managers go to die. Hoddle, Souness, Gullit. And Jamie Redknapp, who must have some very dodgy photos of Rupert Murdoch in a drawer somewhere.
1922 Let us not forget that there is another quarter-final tonight, which pits France's best face off, as Lyon face Bordeaux. We'll have score updates from that match too, bien sur.
1920 No Robben at all for the home side - big loss. His goal in the last round was jaw-dropping. Can't see why Valencia's on the bench for the visitors, I'd have him on over Nani every day of the week. Especially as he seems able to find Rooney's head from anywhere on the park.
1918 Starting line-ups are in:
Bayern: Butt, Lahm, Van Buyten, Demichelis, Badstuber, Altintop, Van Bommel, Pranjic, Ribery, Muller, Olic.
Subs: Rensing, Gorlitz, Klose, Contento, Alaba, Gomez, Tymoschuk.
Man Utd: Van der Sar, Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Nani, Park, Rooney.
Subs: Kuszczak, Berbatov, Giggs, Rafael Da Silva, Jonathan Evans, Valencia, Gibson.
1915 Richard Keyes suggests Rooney's run of form stems from lucky gloves he's been wearing of late. A bit early for that kind of filler, don't you think? Werewolf Keyes should be forced to wear gloves anyway so as to avoid scaring young children with his paws.
1913 The teams are out on the pitch warming up. Jamie Redknapp is talking absolute rhubarb on Sky. All is as it should be.
1910 Barry from Galway reckons Bayern have Man U's number and will win 2-0 tonight at home, shackling Rooney. We shall see.
1905 Well 40 mins until kick-off at the Allianz Arena and the countdown is on folks.
Welcome to RTÉ.ie's live text commentary for tonight's Champions League quarter-final between Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
It's a battle of European titans: Man U have won the European Cup three times, Bayern four.
Of course this is a repeat of the 1999 Champions League final and we all know what happened there.
A certain baby-faced Norseman gave hope to every desperate football fan whose side needs to overcome impossible odds with barely any time left.
'Remember Solskjaer,' they would whisper, through clenched teeth.
The game was a thrilling reinforcement of why we love football on one hand, but on the other, it also turned Man United fans into unbearable gloaters for an as-yet-undetemined amount of time.
Early team news for tonight is that both Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand will start for the away side, while there is still a major doubt about the participation of Arjen Robben, Bayern's most dangerous player of late.

Interesting stat to get you going: that 1999 final is the only time in seven matches that Man Utd have beaten Bayern.
We'll be kicking off here properly at 7pm.
