Defending champions Bohemians move a point ahead of Shamrock Rovers at the top of the table following this comfortable 2-0 win over Cork in front of 2,940 at Turner's Cross.
Pat Fenlon's side struck goals either side of half-time, with defender Ken Oman heading them in front after 38 minutes and they clinched the points when Cork defender Kevin Long deflected a Killian Brennan cross into his own net in the 58th minute.
Bohemains are now just ahead of their Dublin rivals who play Drogheda on Saturday night.
The much-publicised protest by the Cork supporters' group FORAS, Friends of the Rebel Army Society, which was to take place on the pitch before kick-off, was averted by the FAI, who agreed to send a delegation to meet the disgruntled fans.
A meeting took place before the match with the FAI, represented by Fran Gavin, Noel Mooney and Pauric Smythe, who met a number of the FORAS committee, who according to Mooney had a very productive get together.
This was a huge game for both sides with the adverse publicity surrounding Cork's financial problems taking away from what was the clash of the Irish champions; Cork the Setanta Sports Cup holders and Bohemians last year's double winners.
With the League of Ireland Premier Division holders Bohemians lying in second place, two points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers, they needed a win needed to go back to the summit.
Cork were in third place chasing a Europa League spot, and needing points to stay ahead of fourth placed Derry City.
But the visitors were very polished on the night and took a deserved lead on 38 minutes when a cross from the left wing from Paul Keegan seemed to be covered by Cork goalkeeper Mark McNulty. However, he was beaten to the ball by Oman's head and Bohs were one up.
With midfield dominance from Keegan and Glenn Cronin it was no surprise when the Dubliners scored a second goal, although it came after a Cork attack.
City forward Guntars Siligailis lost the ball when going forward,
Bohs broke and Brennan's cross was deflected past McNulty by unfortunate young defender Kevin Long, who was in Don Given's Irish U-21 squad during the week.
The winners might have added to their advantage when a Paddy Madden effort hit the Cork post near the end, this after the Leesiders' best effort from a Billy Dennehy shot which flew just off target on 66 minutes.
