Southampton have completed the signing of Republic of Ireland striker David Connolly.

The 32-year-old former West Ham United, Watford and Wigan forward arrives at St Mary's as a free agent after being released by Sunderland over the summer.

He has signed a contract until the end of the season.

Connolly scored nine goals in 41 appearance for Ireland.

Saints manager Alan Pardew told the club website, www.saintsfc.co.uk, that he thinks Connolly will be an excellent signing for the League One side.

Pardew said: ‘David is keen to show that he is ready to kick in. I believe in him and my staff all feel we could get one of the bargains of the season, but only if David comes back to what he achieved and what he could do before, because obviously he is a Premier League player when he is at this best.

‘He has not played football at this for about 18 months through injury, and one in particular, but he has been training undercover with us for three weeks and looks in good shape.'
