Waterford United cruised to a facile victory in the FAI Cup third round tonight, knocking six past non-league outfit Carrigaline United at the RSC.
The deadlock only lasted seven minutes before Willie John Kiely put the home side ahead and just before the half hour mark, he doubled his tally for the evening, pouncing on a short back pass in the Carrigaline defence.
Kiely should have had a hat-trick before the interval, but wasted two good chances – blazing over the bar with the first and snatching at the second, pushing it wide.
But Joe Mulcahy did put Waterford 3-0 up just before the half-time whistle.
In an uneven game short of quality, an attendance of 310 saw the Blues net their fourth goal from the penalty spot via Graham Cummins after 69 minutes, and the same player made it five with seven minutes remaining.
Cummins narrowly missed out on a hat-trick himself with four minutes left, as he beat two Carrigaline players on the wing and charged into the box. He knocked the ball past the ‘keeper and but substitute David Grincell touched it on into the net make it six.
