Athlone 1-2 Waterford United

Waterford United moved into joint third place in the League of Ireland First Division after a 2-1 victory over Athlone Town in Lisseywollen.

This game sprung to life after a scoreless first half devoid of chances when, in the 69th minute, a corner was headed back across the goal by Robbie Hamm and Noel McGee, on his 100th Athlone Town appearance, slotted home.

Waterford equalised on 75 minutes through Willie John Kiely, who was allowed the easiest of tap ins through a crowd of players from one yard out.

However, Town hero McGee turned villian in the 81st minute when he received his marching orders for a second yellow card.

The comeback was completed on 89 minutes as Kiely grabbed his brace with a placed strike from 10 yards out to secure the points for the Blues.
