Cork City have been denied permission to speak to Sammy McIllroy about the vacant managerial role at Turner's Cross, by his current employers Morecambe.

City, who have been without a manager since they sacked Alan Matthews last month, had approached with League Two side with a view to speaking to McIlroy.

However, the English club's Chief executive Rod Taylor confirmed that while Cork had been in contact, they had been denied permission to speak to the manager.

'We had a phone call today from Cork City asking if they could speak to Sammy about their manager's position but we have denied them permission to approach him,' Taylor said.
