Former Shelbourne and Derry City goalkeeper Alan Gough has been appointed as the new manager of League of Ireland First Division side Longford Town.

Gough, who spent much of the past season playing with Bray Wanderers, succeeds Vinny Perth at Flancare Park.

Perth had taken on the role as caretaker boss following Aaron Callaghan's resignation in August.

Longford finished eight in the First Division table last season, with just 35 points from 36 games.

A statement of the club's website read: 'Longford Town are delighted to announce the appointment of Alan Gough as their new manager for the 2009 season.

'The club wish Alan and his team all the best in his new role.'

In other First Division news, managerless Waterford United have called a press conference for 7.15pm this evening when they are expected to unveil a successor to Gareth Cronin. Former Cobh Ramblers boss Stephen Henderson is rumoured to be a contender for the post.
