Playing out of the Weserstadion on the banks of the Wesr River in Bremen, Werder have come to prominence as one of the top Bundesliga clubs over the past five years and most recently won the league in 2004.
Werder have become Champions League regulars over the past few seasons but have yet to make a serious impact on the competition.
They have previous success in Europe, however, as they won the, now defunct Cup Winners' Cup in 1992, beating AS Monaco 2-0 in the final in Lisbon.
Coach: Thomas Schaaf
Schaaf was a player on the famous Werder Bremen side that tasted Cup Winners' Cup success. He also won two league titles as a player and has been with the club since 1972, where he signed as a youth.
His coaching career began in 1987 when he took over youth team duties and he was named first team manager in 1999.
Schaaf's side won the title in 2004, which led to him being named German manager of the year at the end of that campaign.
One to watch: Diego
The Brazil international turned up at the north-western German club in May 2006 having signed for £6million from Portuguese side Porto.
Diego is classy midfielder who sits just off the front players and graced the Croke Park turf when Brazil played Ireland in a friendly international in February 2008.
He made a name for himself as a youngster in the Santos side, playing alongside Robinho, and while his career appeared to stall during his spell at Porto, his two years at Bremen has seen his stock rise again as he is back in Dunga's Brazil side and has generated lots of interest throughout Europe, most notably from Real Madrid.
