Bohemians stretched their lead to four points at the top of the Eircom League Premier Division and they can thank John Paul Kelly for that.

On as a half time sub for the injured Jason McGuinness, Kelly took just 33 seconds to make his mark, scoring a spectacular opener.

The Gypsies had made hard work of the first half, in which a game Cobh side kept them busy but "Joxer" quelled any rising doubts, skinning Alan Carey on the outside, managing to keep the ball in before giving himself just enough room to squeeze the ball below James McCarthy.

The youngster was excellent in everything he did, and on 78 minutes it was he who won the penalty that doubled Bohs lead.

Killian Brennan has been excellent from the spot this season and made no mistake once again, before Kelly played in Jason Byrne on 82, and he finished the job for the league leaders.

The game started at a lively pace, and after six minutes Cobh's Ross Gaynor stole in behind the Bohs defence and drew a sharp save from Brian Murphy.

At the other end, the in form Brennan had his rasping shot saved by James McCarthy.

The Cobh goalkeeper should have had more work to do minutes later, but Byrne failed to test him after a sweeping move that ended with Neale Fenn stepping over Anto Murphy's low cross, only for his strike partner to miscue.

Byrne was again the culprit seconds later when Fenn found him with a pin point centre, but the former Cardiff City man's header lacked direction.

Cobh's Greg O'Halloran didn't have to be asked twice when a short clearance from a Cobh corner came his way but his pile driver was always rising.

Probably the best chance of the half came on 26 minutes when Brian Murphy's sweeping pass found his name sake Anto on the right wing.

His first touch let him down but he chased the ball down and collided with McCarthy who was happy that referee Paul Tuite only awarded a corner.

Brennan whipped an inswinging cross straight to Anto Murphy but McCarthy was equal to the glancing header turning it around the post.

As the half drew to a close John Kearney was booked for a foul on Killian Brennan. The Drogheda native picked himself up and in a pre rehearsed move found Fenn who laid the ball off to captain Owen Heary but his shot went high.

Kelly's introduction made the difference in the second half, and his performance spurred the Gypsies to a fine second half performance. Mark Rossiter, Byrne and Kelly himself all went close before new signing Mindaugas Kalonas had a shot cleared off the line.
