Robbie Doyle's late penalty completed the rout for Fingal

Sporting Fingal recorded their most comprehensive victory of the campaign against Monaghan United at Morton Stadium.

Peter Hynes gave the fourth-placed side in the First Division a deserved lead seven minutes before half-time when he rose at the near post to nod a right-wing cross by new signing Brian Morrisroe past Mons goalkeeper Brendan Kennedy.

It took just two minutes of the second half to elapse for the second goal to arrive after Robbie Doyle flicked on Morrisroe's corner into the path of Philip Byrne to head home.

Sporting skipper Paul Caffrey extended the lead further when he latched onto a through pass by Robbie Doyle after 58 minutes before blasting high into the net from eight yards to leave Kennedy helpless.

Kevin Williamson's free-kick clipped the post on 69 minutes in the closest chance for Monaghan to register a goal, but Doyle concluded the scoring two minutes into the stoppage time from the spot, after Conan Byrne was bundled over inside the penalty area by Aaron Mooney.

It was Doyle's 12th goal of the campaign.

The result moves Sporting to within six points of league leaders Shelbourne after they were held to a 1-1 draw against Waterford United.
