Medical teams from Manchester United and Portugal are to seek further specialist advice over an ankle injury sustained by winger Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo said after Portugal's quarter-final exit from Euro 2008 last month that he had been carrying an injury for three months and would need an operation.
'Manchester United medical staff met with the medical team from the Portuguese FA and Cristiano Ronaldo in Lisbon today regarding the ongoing treatment of his injured right ankle,' United said on their website (www.manutd.com).
'As a result, further specialist advice is being sought and an announcement will be made on any action in due course.'
Ronaldo remains in the spotlight because of the uncertainty over where the 23-year-old will be playing next season.
United have said he is not for sale but Real Madrid have made clear their interest. Ronaldo said last month that 'the possibilities (of going to Real) are big'.
Asked about his future in Lisbon by Portuguese television, on Wednesday Ronaldo said: 'I will not talk about anything. I cannot speak.'
Ronaldo won a Premier League and Champions League double with United last season, scoring 42 goals, and was named England's Footballer of the Year for a second season in a row.
