St Mary's 0-1 Wayside Celtic

Leinster Senior Legaue side Wayside Celtic are through to the fourth round of the Ford FAI Cup after they defeated Munster Senior League side St Mary's at Kilcully in Cork.

The only goal of the game was scored by substitute Ian Callaghan who powerfully headed home Mark Hanlon's corner-kick with 20 minutes remaining.

The visitors' goalkeeper Alan Young saved a 79th-minute penalty when he dived to touch away Aidan O'Callaghan's spot-kick, as the Cork side, who won promotion to the premier division on Wednesday night, tried hard to earn a replay.

This was the third meeting of these two sides this season after the visitors Wayside had defeated St Mary's in the quarter-final of this season's FAI Intermediate Cup after a replay.

Wayside have been in good form away from home in cup competitions, they had already won 4-1 in Donegal against Swilly Rovers in the last round of the FAI Cup, and they recently won the Metropolitan Cup when defeating league champions Crumlin United.

St Mary's had played extra-time on Wednesday night last when they defeated Mayfield to win promotion from the first division of the Munster senior league after being relegated last season.

The home side played well in the first half with Andrew Mylod having a fine game in the middle of the park, but they lost lively forward Paul Feehan through injury before the break.

Wayside who had left-sided midfielder John O'Neill playing well in the opening half, came more into the game after the break and man-of-the-match Wayne Callaghan (brother of the goal scorer) went close to a lead goal, but his shot was well saved by Stuart Coakley.

St Mary' s fought back as Darren Hill set up substitute Victor Mylod whose shot was just over and a Gary Marrion cross was headed just wide by Adrian Homan, when the midfielder should have hit the target.

Then came the crucial goal after 70 minutes when a well-struck corner from the right was brilliantly headed home from six yards by super sub Ian Callaghan in a crowded penalty area.

The Cork side had a great chance to equalise when Hill was brought down in the penalty box by Alan Pratt, referee Alan Kelly had no hesitation pointing to the spot.

However, defender Aidan O'Callaghan, who had played well at the back, had his low shot tipped away by former Bray Wanderers goalkeeper Alan Young.

So Wayside are through to the last 16 of the FAI Cup and they would be hoping for clash with one of the top Premier League sides and the chance to cash in on their good cup season.
