AC Milan skipper Paolo Maldini has extended his contract with the Serie A side for another season, the Italian club confirmed.

Maldini's new deal will take him up until 30 June 2009 for a 25th season with AC Milan.

Maldini, who will be 40 on 26 June, had announced in December that he would stop playing at the end of the year and leave Milan where he made his debut in January 1985.

But he backtracked in March stating 'only an idiot doesn't change his mind'.

The Italian defender has won seven Italian titles, five Champions League crowns, one Italian Cup and three world club tournaments.

AC Milan's last Serie A title was in 2004 and Maldini said: 'The championship is a title which we haven't won for a long time. We've only won it twice in the past ten years, so it's an additional motivation for next season.

'It's also a necessary passage to be able to play the most important competition (Champions League).'

AC Milan finished fifth in the Serie A last season and will not play Champions League but the UEFA Cup next season.
