Goals from Colin Fortune and Philip Gorman were enough to give Kildare County just their second win of the season over Wexford Youths at Station Road.

Cathal Brady had the ball in the net early on for the home side only to see his effort ruled out for offside.

Kildare dominated possession in the early stages and Ciaran Kilduff should have opened the scoring after 15 minutes, but he could only head over from 12 yards after Colin Fortune’s free kick had found him unmarked in the Wexford box.

Fortune’s set pieces caused Wexford plenty of problems during the game and it was the former Athlone man who broke the deadlock with his first goal in a Kildare jersey after 26 minutes.

Barry Clancy’s quick throw caught Wexford napping, Brady crossed into the centre where Barry Slattery made a nuisance of himself and the ball fell for Gorman to tee up Fortune for a neat finish.

Fortune returned the favour five minutes later when his floated free kick was volleyed home empathically by Gorman for his fourth goal of the season.

Wexford manager Mick Wallace had seen enough and made two changes before interval, one of which almost paid immediate dividends when John Flynn-O’Connor headed Conor Sinnott’s cross past Treacy only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Kildare continued to press in the second half and could have added to their tally with efforts from Ciaran Kilduff and Cathal Brady, but they were full value for their win by the end of the game.
