Paolo Maldini has revealed he may continue playing for AC Milan next season.

The Rossoneri captain, who will turn 40 in June, was set to retire at the end of this year, but appears to have gone back on his decision after announcing he is planning to discuss a contract extension with Milan sporting director Adriano Galliani.

‘In a week I'll meet with Galliani to renew my contract,’ he told Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

‘My decision definitely does not depend on whether we play in the Champions League instead of the UEFA Cup.’

In a further statement on the AC Milan website, www.acmilan.it, he added: ‘Mostly [my decision] depends on my physical condition, which is better than at the start of last season.

‘The players, directors and coaches have asked me outright if we could carry on for another year together, but above all the decision will come down to whether my desire to play football is still there.’

Maldini has played for the Milanese giants his entire career, which dates back to 1984.

Earlier on Tuesday the Italian media had reported that Milan were set to make a bid for Barcelona's Carles Puyol as a replacement for the Italian veteran.
