Shamrock Rovers ended a dismal run of results by taking a point from their eircom League of Ireland clash with Derry City at Tolka Park.

The Hoops had taken just one point from their previous five league encounters.

The hosts led for a good deal of the game courtesy of a Padraig Amond penalty on the half hour, but the Candystripes rescued a point with a Conor Sammon goal with just under 15 minutes left.

Rovers manager Pat Scully reacted to last week's loss at Sligo Rovers by making four changes to his starting XI, while Derry lined out without the injured Pat McCourt who didn't make the tip south from Foyleside.

Amond opened the scoring when, after a neat move involving fellow striker Eoin Doyle, his shot from inside the box cannoned off Derry veteran Peter Hutton's hand. Amond then clinically slotted the spot kick to Gerard Doherty's left-hand side.

The visitors struggled to mount a comeback in the second half, but were able to ensure that their opponents weren't able to extend their lead, though Doyle should have made the game safe but somehow contrived to miss a glorious chance from close range.

Rovers were made to pay for that miss when Gareth McGlynn's left-footed effort was pushed on to the crossbar by Barry Murphy, but Sammon was on hand to head over the line despite Murphy getting a touch on the ball.
