Bray Wanderers hung on to seal their place in the last eight of the eircom League Cup with a 1-0 win over Shamrock Rovers.

Having broken the dead-lock early through John Mulroy the Wicklow side extended their recent unbeaten run to six matches while the Dubliners are now without a victory in six.

The teenage striker had helped the Republic of Ireland FAI Schools team to take the Centenary Shield title recently after goals against England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

And he needed just four minutes to find the breakthrough at the Carlisle Grounds.

After a lucky rebound off Alan Cawley, the 18-year-old raced through but was denied by Karl Coleman. But Mulroy pounced on the loose ball, scoring with a close-range volley.

Both teams tinkered with their line-ups. Wanderers made six changes to the side who had beaten Cobh Ramblers including a debut to Dane Massey at left-back.

As for the Hoops - playing their second match in three days - they had just three survivors from the starting line-up that succumbed to Sligo Rovers last Saturday.

Having not been in the tie for the most part, the visitors rallied late on. But Chris O'Connor won it for the Seagulls.

The Australian thwarted substitute Eoin Doyle with an instinctive save off a point blank header 86th minute.

Two minutes later, Darragh Maguire was left unmarked at the back post from Sean O'Connor's corner.

But the keeper went down to smartly smother the header.

Bray finished with ten men as Mark Duggan was dismissed in the 89th minute for a second bookable offence.
