Wexford Youths made it back-to-back victories in the eircom League as they overcame Athlone Town at Ferrycarrig Park.
A first-half strike from Gavin Doyle set the tone as the home side continued their recent good form.
Danny Furlong struck his side’s second goal three minutes into stoppage-time to put away the midlanders’ challenge.
Athlone Town, with the elements behind them, dominated the opening 20 minutes and forced four corners.
But it was Wexford Youths who came closest to breaking the deadlock when centre-forward Paul Murphy hammered a fine shot across goal, but it struck the inside of the upright rebounding into the arms of keeper Anthony Jinks.
Nine minutes before the break Jinks was the real villian when he allowed a harmless looking efforts from Gavin Doyle slip through his grasp into the corner of the net.
Two minutes later Noel McGee beat home keeper Jason Russell with a header but Thomas Hawkins managed to clear the ball off the line leaving the home side to lead 1-0 at the interval.
Having lost Paul Murphy through injury after thirty-two minutes, Wexford Youths lacked a real presence up front.
Similar to the opening half, Athlone Town dominated the opening 20 minutes on the resumption but failed to create a worthwhile chance as Garrett Larkin and Anthony Russell were dominant at the back for the home side.
Danny Furlong and Liam O'Loughlin had efforts well saved by keeper Jinks as the home side looked for their second goal.
Undoubtedly the heavy rain and strong wind had is affect, but Jason McCartney saw a fine 77th minute effort go just outside the left-hand post and that proved the nearest the visitors came to equalising.
Deep into stoppage-time substitute Darren Browne had a shot beaten away by keeper Jinks but Furlong was on hand to crash the loose ball to the net.
