Liverpool have confirmed they will appeal against the extension of Javier Mascherano's ban for being sent off against Manchester United from one to three matches.
The Argentina international, who was also fined £15,000 by the Football Association, admitted a charge of improper conduct over his failure to leave the pitch following the red card.
But Liverpool believes past precedents mean there is a case for the ban only being two matches.
Mascherano has already served the first match of the ban and will also sit out Saturday's league match at Arsenal because Liverpool have not asked for the ban to be set aside pending the outcome of the appeal.
As things stand, Mascherano will serve the third match of his ban when Liverpool play Blackburn at Anfield on April 13.
The midfielder is available for Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal as the suspension only affects domestic competition.
