Givens laments missed opportunities

Don Givens was left ruing another game that got away after Ireland Under-21s' 1-1 draw with Montenegro at Terryland Park.

Once again his side had not capitalised after dominating a UEFA Championship qualifier and again they failed to register three points as Andy Keogh scrambled a point after Mijusko Bojovic had put the visitors in front.

Givens believed a draw was the least Ireland deserved given the amount of play they enjoyed and the ease with which they gifted to opener when Bojovic rose unopposed at a corner in the second half.

'The initial feeling is one of disappointment that we haven't got a victory from a game I thought we deserved to win,' said the Ireland Under-21 boss.

'I felt we deserved a victory, but it's probably of our own doing in a way.

'We conceded a goal from a dead-ball situation where we were asleep a little bit on corner, and then we had lots of the play and didn't capitalise on it, so it probably in some ways sums up our campaign.

'We have performed quite well, but maybe haven't got our just rewards through one thing and another, sometimes through our own fault.

'But we haven't got the results that maybe the volume of play that we had merits. It's disappointing that we didn't get the three points.'

That has been the story of this campaign for Ireland and they are now highly unlikely to catch the Montenegrins, who sit above them in the table with just two games remaining.

That is all they can hope to achieve now with England storming ahead, 15 points clear.

'It's been a frustrating campaign,' continued Givens. 'With the exception of the Portugal game where we got battered, I think we have performed quite well in games, but when you look at the table it doesn't show that.'
