Paul Robinson has been recalled to the England squad following an injury to Scott Carson - just a month after he could not get into the Tottenham Hotspur team.

Robinson, 28, was dropped by Spurs head coach Juande Ramos in January after a series of errors but returned to the starting line-up and helped win the Carling Cup.

He has since kept his place in Ramos' side and England boss Fabio Capello was at White Hart Lane today where the goalkeeper pulled off a stunning save to deny Sean Davis.

Along with Carson, West Ham defender Matthew Upson was ruled out through injury from the provisional squad named to face France this week.

Jermaine Jenas and Shaun Wright-Phillips, who scored in Capello's first match in charge, were not included in the final 23-man squad. Jenas was not in the matchday squad to face Pompey.

Pompey striker Jermain Defoe was also left out despite six goals in six games since moving from Spurs, while Peter Crouch remained in the squad.

The other players to miss out were Aston Villa duo Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Young and Middlesbrough defender David Wheater.

David Beckham remained in the 23-man squad, meaning the midfielder will win his 100th cap if Capello uses him at the Stade de France this week.

Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland picked up a back injury after four minutes of his side's defeat at Blackburn but is expected to join up with the squad tomorrow evening.

Rio Ferdinand was also included despite also struggling with a back complaint.

Glen Johnson and Stewart Downing missed the cut last time but they were not on the names omitted on this occasion.

Up to 12 players could feature on 'Grand Slam Sunday' when the top four of the Barclays Premier League face each other.

Capello will be at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea against Arsenal, and general manager Franco Baldini will be at Manchester United for the clash against Liverpool.
