Sligo Rovers 1-2 Bohemians

Bohemians got their title challenge back on track with a hard-earned 2-1 defeat of Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds.

Goals from former Rovers player Liam Burns and Glen Crowe, earned Pat Fenlon's men their second win of the season, despite Rafael Cretaro netting for the hosts.

The home side stuck with the same team that drew with champions Drogheda last time out, but Bohs made three changes to the team beaten by St Pat's.

Conor Powell came in for the injured Kevin Hunt, Stephen O'Donnell replaced the suspended Killian Brennan, and Jason Byrne got the nod up front ahead of Darren Mansaram.

The Showgrounds pitch, which irked Drogs boss Paul Doolin last week, was centre of attention once again as referee Hugo Whoriskey got Rovers officials to clear loose stones off the sanded surface before kick-off.

When the match did get underway, Bohs enjoyed the more productive opening, testing the home keeper, Richard Brush, three times in the opening ten minutes.

Byrne, making his first Bohs start, had a couple of shots on target, but Rovers had a chance of their own when Romuald Boco's stinging cross was headed clear by Powell.

The Bohs full-back impressed even more when breaking clear on the counter-attack, before providing the cross for Crowe to direct a header straight at Brush.

Bohs had another great chance when O'Donnell's corner was met by Crowe at the back post, but his effort was cleared off the line by Rovers captain Gavin Peers.

O'Donnell's next corner, on 27 minutes, did, however, finally create the breakthrough for the visitors.

The deep cross was turned back into the danger area at the far post, and centre-back Burns rushed in to smash the ball to the net.

Rovers did create chances on their rare forays forward –Cretaro did brilliant to rise above Owen Heary and power a header just past the post, while Fahrudin Kuduzovic's touch let him down when Boco picked him out in space inside the area – but Bohs were good value for their 1-0 interval lead.

Rovers however, were right back in it at the start of the second-half, and levelled matters just three minutes in.

Anto Murphy's long throw evaded Bohs keeper Brian Murphy and everyone else in the area, and Cretaro snuck in at the far post to punish from close range.

Ken Oman had the ball in the net at the other end two minutes later, but Whoriskey had blown for an earlier infringement.

The same fate befell Rovers on the hour-mark, when Mauro Almeida headed past Murphy from inside the area, but the referee spotted a push.

With Rovers still re-grouping, Bohs put the ball back in the net once again, and this time there was not doubting its legitimacy.

Chris Turner picked out Crowe with a fine ball through the middle, and the striker made no mistake, firing low past a helpless Brush.

Rovers reacted by making a triple switch, with striker Matthew Judge, and wingers Sean Doherty and Brian Cash introduced.

And the home side almost got the equaliser, when Seamus Coleman played a one-two with Judge and broke into the area, but his stinging effort rose just too high.
