Bobby Robson is to become an ambassador for the Football Association of Ireland.

Robson previously served as International Football Consultant during former manager Stephen Staunton's disappointing reign, although was plagued by ill health.

In his new role, Robson, who recently celebrated his 75th birthday, will contribute to the development of a high-performance strategy for elite players.

He will also offer guidance and support to technical staff and younger elite players involved in the National Academy at Abbotstown once that is established.

Robson's brief will further see him assist in the promotion of the FAI's joint bid with the Irish Football Association for the 2011 UEFA under-21 championships and the 2011 UEFA Cup final.

Robson said: 'I have really enjoyed working with the FAI over the past two years and the people of Ireland have been fantastic towards me.

'I am particularly delighted I am going to be involved in the development of elite young players.'

FAI chief executive John Delaney said: 'Over the past two years we have seen at first hand the many attributes of Sir Bobby and we know he has a lot to offer us.

'He is a fantastic ambassador for the game and it is a tremendous plus for the association that he is still part of our team.'
