Newcastle's Joey Barton has warned Toon fans they will never see the success they crave on Tyneside, unless they change their ‘vicious’ nature.

Barton, a £5million signing from Manchester City last summer, has been ‘shocked’ by the behaviour of Newcastle supporters - especially their treatment of manager Sam Allardyce.

For the 25-year-old, the fans' abuse came to a head during last weekend's 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool in the Barclays Premier League.

‘I have not yet seen the famous crowd I was expecting to hear get behind us,’ said the England midfielder.

‘Instead it has been vicious; I don't think I have heard a crowd that vicious.'
