Noel McGee’s superb curling shot on the hour mark was enough to give Athlone a well-earned win at Station Road.
Jim Sheridan had broken the deadlock on 29 minutes when he headed Ryan Casey’s free kick past Colin Cassidy.
The home side responded well though and levelled the game seven minutes before half time through Ger Robinson but McGee won the game for Athlone. Eoghan Carew was shown a late red card for Kildare.
