Atkinson makes managerial return

Ron Atkinson has been appointed director of football at Halesowen Town.

The former Manchester United and Aston Villa manager, who disgraced himself with a racist outburst while commentating on a Chelsea match in 2004, will be presented before the club's FA Trophy first qualifying round match with Brackley Town on Saturday.

The match will be manager Morell Maison's first in charge and Atkinson appears set to assist him behind the scenes, as he did at Kettering earlier this year before quitting in April over the club's decision to sack Maison.

Atkinson, 68, who also managed West Brom, Coventry and Sheffield Wednesday had focused almost exclusively on a career in broadcasting after leaving Nottingham Forest in 1999.

Halesowen lie 13th in the British Gas Business Premier League, three divisions below the Football League.
